Course Information

Preliminary findings from the MorThemes intervention program

MorThemes is an educator-developed literacy intervention specifically designed for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students, aiming to enhance their morphological awareness, vocabulary acquisition, and syntactic skills in written English. Developed through collaborative efforts among teachers of the deaf and a speech pathologist, this program is currently being implemented across multiple bilingual-bicultural Centres for Deaf Education in Australia, serving a diverse cohort of students.

This presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of the MorThemes program, detailing its purpose, structure, and practical applications within the classroom. Participants will gain insights into the significance of morphology instruction for DHH learners and discover how explicit teaching of morphological concepts facilitates access to word meaning and grammatical function.

Educators currently implementing the program will discuss its impact on teaching practices and student outcomes. Additionally, attendees will be introduced to key tools developed for the program—such as lesson tracking systems, thematic word lists, and syntax assessments—alongside practical strategies for immediate application in their own contexts.

This session aims to equip educators with actionable insights to foster effective literacy instruction tailored to the unique needs of DHH students.

While this session will provide insights and resources, attendees will not be equipped to deliver the MorThemes program following this training.
