Fostering Joy: Why & How We Should Recognize, Highlight and Celebrate the Joyful Moments with Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
This presentation will introduce the Fostering Joy Movement (#DHHFosteringJoy), providing a brief history and overview of this parent-professional collaboration aimed at celebrating the joy involved in raising and supporting children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Informed by science, the “benefits of joy” will be described. Participants will have the opportunity to explore how, as educators and allied professionals working in educational systems, they can embrace and benefit from the Fostering Joy framework. Participants will learn about how they might incorporate more joy into their work and ways that they can join the movement as Joy Ambassadors.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Describe, in their own words/signs, the overarching premise of Fostering Joy.
- Identify at least two reasons, based on science, that a “focus on joy” is beneficial.
- Inform at least one other person of their individualized plan for fostering joy.
