Fostering Joy: Why & How We Should Recognize, Highlight and Celebrate the Joyful Moments with Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

This presentation will introduce the Fostering Joy Movement (#DHHFosteringJoy), providing a brief history and overview of this parent-professional collaboration aimed at celebrating the joy involved in raising and supporting children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Informed by science, the “benefits of joy” will be described. Participants will have the opportunity to explore how, as educators and allied professionals working in educational systems, they can embrace and benefit from the Fostering Joy framework. Participants will learn about how they might incorporate more joy into their work and ways that they can join the movement as Joy Ambassadors.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe, in their own words/signs, the overarching premise of Fostering Joy.
  2. Identify at least two reasons, based on science, that a “focus on joy” is beneficial.
  3. Inform at least one other person of their individualized plan for fostering joy.

  • Amy Szarkowski

    Amy Szarkowski, PhD, is Director of The Institute at the Children’s Center for Communication/Beverly School for the Deaf (CCCBSD), an organization that – through partnerships and community engagement with individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing or have disabilities – strives to bridge research and practice to inform scholarship as well as delivery of supports that promote professional excellence. Dr. Szarkowski is also on the faculty in the LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities) program at Boston Children’s Hospital. Additionally, she is a Research Fellow in the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Dr. Szarkowski serves as a Core Team member with Fostering Joy and a member of the Writing Team for the Family-Centered Early Intervention (FCEI) International Consensus Panel. She obtained bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and a Health Promotion/Fitness Management; three master’s in Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Administration & Supervision; and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.
