Course Information

The proactive development of social capital provides ways for students to be supported and augments traditional methods, such as the development of language and literacy. Social capital can provide opportunities for adolescents who are deaf or hard of hearing in a range of areas including language, wellbeing, school connectedness, positive identity formation, and access to postschool options. This presentation will: briefly define social capital and its relevance to this population; outline the two stages of the social capital research project; summarise key findings of the survey and interview data; and suggest practical ways that the findings of this project can be applied. Emphasis will be given to the way that practitioners can positively support students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
