Course Information

This online series will be of interest to professionals and community members who support people who are blind or have low vision. With a specific focus on technology in the field of orientation and mobility, this series aims to provide an update to date overview of the resources currently available.

Session 1: AI (Artificial Intelligence) for learners who are blind and low vision with Chris Tabb

10-11am 18th March 2026 (AEDT)

This session will focus on AI (Artificial Intelligence) for use with learners who are blind and low vision through devices like Meta Glasses, Alexa on Amazon devices, etc., as well as new devices such as Glide from Glidance, NOA from biped AI, WeWalk Cane 2, and other devices. In addition, we will look at some ways that professionals can use AI to generate activities for planning goals and objectives with clients.

Session 2: Accessible Maps with Chris Tabb

10-11am 29th April 2026 (AEST)

This session provides an overview of Accessible Maps. Auditory maps, tactile maps, and digital maps all provide options for learners to access information. They all have unique strengths and characteristics to match with a learner’s needs and abilities. We will review styles of maps, making maps, matching the map style with the learner, and strategies for developing literacy for maps.

Session 4: GPS Apps with Chris Tabb

This session will focus on GPS Apps. We will review apps that are currently available, and using them safely while in the community. Some apps we will review include Apple Maps, Google Maps, Indigo, Lazarillo, Blindsquare, and others. We will also discuss headphones such as bone conduction headphones and others that allow environmental auditory information to still be attended to while the learner is using digital audio information. Additionally, we will review a variety of haptic devices for accessing information in various forms while in the process of dynamic travel.
