Emeritus Professor Philip Newall has been recognised for his outstanding service to audiology education and research and the community, receiving a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours.

With an extensive academic and clinical career spanning multiple institutions and organisations both in Australia and internationally, Professor Newall specialises in the epidemiology of hearing loss, amplification, and audiology in developing countries. He was the first Professor of Audiology within the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University and has taught and mentored generations of members of the audiology profession in Australia.

Professor Newall has a longstanding association with NextSense, having worked as an honorary audiologist from 1990-2007. In 2007 he became a Professorial Fellow in our research and professional education arm, NextSense Institute, and later Honorary Professorial Fellow, a position he continues to hold, with distinction. He was named a Life Member in 2022 for his dedication to NextSense.

Professor Newall has made important contributions to children’s hearing health in the Pacific region, particularly in Samoa, where he and his wife, Cristy, have been carrying out paediatric hearing tests and fitting donated hearing aids in a voluntary capacity over many years.

Professor Greg Leigh, NextSense Institute Director, congratulated Professor Newall on his outstanding achievement. 'Philip’s selfless approach to sharing his knowledge and capability for the benefit of the community knows no bounds. It is most appropriate that he should be recognised by his country for his exceptional service,' he said.
